Assaí Atacadista ordered to pay R$ 1 million for labor violations in Bahia

Assaí Atacadista, operating through Sendas Distribuidora S/A, has been ordered by the Labor Court of Salvador to pay R$ 1 million in collective moral damages due to labor irregularities in Bahia. The ruling follows a civil public action initiated by the Labor Public Ministry (MPT).

Investigations conducted between 2022 and 2025 revealed significant health and safety violations at a unit in Salvador. Reported issues included inadequate or damaged personal protective equipment (EPIs), such as torn gloves and broken cold room clothing, as well as risks involving electrical shocks, falls, and the potential for workers to be trapped in cold chambers due to faulty locks.

Additional findings noted poor lighting, dirty or wet floors, and unsafe storage practices, including merchandise placed directly on the ground and unstable shelving. In addition to the fine, the company must implement 28 specific measures to comply with safety and labor standards. Failure to meet these obligations will result in a fine of R$ 30,000 per infraction.
