Assalto à Brasileira film inspired by 1987 Londrina bank robbery
The Brazilian film ‘Assalto à Brasileira’, directed by José Eduardo Belmonte and written by L. G. Bayão, is scheduled for theatrical release on November 5, 2026. The production is inspired by a real-life bank robbery that occurred at the main Banestado agency in Londrina, Paraná, on December 10, 1987.
The film features Murilo Benício as Paulo, a recently dismissed journalist who becomes involved in negotiations between criminals and authorities while seeking a major scoop. The cast also includes Christian Malheiros, Robson Nunes, Fernanda de Freitas, and Paulo Miklos.
Set against a backdrop of economic crisis and high inflation in Brazil, the narrative explores social tensions and the relationship between the press, the public, and the authorities. The film has already received recognition at various festivals, including three awards at the 2025 Brasília Festival, such as the ‘Best Film’ award from the Popular Jury.
