Assam and Nagaland authorities conduct joint eviction at Mekirang
The governments of Assam and Nagaland conducted a joint eviction drive at Mekirang village near the Assam-Nagaland border, resulting in the demolition of 59 houses. Local officials, including the Wokha Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police, were present during the operation.
Mekirang Village Council Chairman Sorenthung Lotha called for an amicable solution to the long-standing border dispute and highlighted the critical lack of road connectivity in the area. Residents of Mekirang, Lio Longchum, and Longayim villages currently depend on Assam for transportation and essential services. Due to insufficient government intervention, the Lotha Lower Range Public Organisation has attempted to crowdfund a motorable road to serve as a vital lifeline for the three villages.
Representatives from the Lotha Lower Range Public Organisation cautioned that the evictions should not result in the loss of Naga land rights and urged both state governments to reach a mutually acceptable resolution to safeguard the interests of affected residents.
