Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border tension escalates following stone-pelting

Tensions have escalated along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in the Dhemaji district following incidents of stone-pelting and police firing. On Thursday, clashes occurred near the Likabali entry point, where police reportedly fired rounds in the air to disperse protesters and control crowds. No major injuries were reported from the latest incident, though the situation remains under close monitoring by authorities.

The unrest is linked to an ongoing economic blockade initiated by the Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK) on Wednesday. This blockade follows a previous incident on August 10 in the Mingmang Bodoti area, where 11 villagers were allegedly injured during a dispute over land claims. The blockade has disrupted vehicle movement between the two states, though emergency and school transportation has been permitted.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu have both called for peace. Sarma emphasized the long-standing bond between the states and noted that 52 villages remain under dispute, which both governments aim to resolve through dialogue. Khandu stated that officials are engaging with various student and welfare societies to facilitate discussions and restore normalcy.
