Assam Cabinet approves ₹50,000 crore infrastructure and healthcare package

The Assam Cabinet has approved a ₹50,000 crore infrastructure and development package to be implemented over a seven-year period starting in 2027-28. The funding will be sourced through state resources and ₹30,000 crore from NABARD, following a signed Memorandum of Understanding.

Key components of the package include the construction of 6,000 Anganwadi centres, the improvement of nearly 1,000 high schools, and the strengthening of roads, power networks, and anti-flood embankments. Social initiatives include providing ₹1.5 lakh per house for tea garden workers, establishing women’s markets and hostels, and constructing stadiums and auditoriums in every Assembly constituency.

In the healthcare sector, the Cabinet approved ₹600 crore for the establishment of a Proton Beam Therapy Centre at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). This facility, part of the Assam State Secondary Healthcare Initiative for Service Delivery Transformation (ASSIST) project, will be funded by a ₹315 crore loan from the World Bank and ₹285 crore from the state government. It is expected to be the first such facility in India’s public healthcare system.
