Assam Cabinet approves mandatory Muslim marriage registration rules

The Assam Cabinet has approved the ‘Assam Muslim Marriage Registration (Compulsory) Rules, 2026’, establishing a uniform procedural framework for the mandatory registration of Muslim marriages across the state. Under these rules, marriages will be registered by designated registrars rather than kazis, with the possibility of authorizing panchayat-level officials to handle increased application volumes.

In addition to marriage regulations, the Cabinet approved a one-time Aadhaar enrolment exemption for women in self-help groups (SHGs) until March 31, 2027, to facilitate access to bank loans. The state also announced welfare measures for the festive season, including an increased October payment of Rs 1,500 for Arunodoi scheme beneficiaries and subsidized sugar and dal priced at Rs 100 each.

Furthermore, the Cabinet approved the Assam Sustainable Wetland and Integrated Fisheries Transformation (SWIFT) Project. The project, costing Rs 796.88 crore, will be funded by a Rs 637.504 crore loan from the Asian Development Bank and a Rs 159.376 crore contribution from the state government.
