Assam Chief Minister addresses road safety and honors fallen police officers
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has raised concerns regarding a surge in fatal road accidents across the state during the Durga Puja festive period. Highlighting accident-prone stretches and ongoing road renovation work as contributing factors, Sarma emphasized the need for increased public awareness regarding unsafe driving practices, such as driving under the influence and failing to wear helmets.
Recent tragedies include a fatal collision on National Highway 15 in the Biswanath district and a crash in Darrang district that resulted in multiple deaths. Authorities are working to address identified ‘red points’ where road conditions or layouts increase risk.
Separately, Chief Minister Sarma attended the Police Commemoration Day in Guwahati to honor martyred personnel. He paid tribute to six Assam Police officers who died in the line of duty over the past year, noting that 154 police personnel were lost nationwide during the same period. Sarma expressed condolences to the families of the fallen officers and acknowledged the historical sacrifices made by the Assam Police since Independence.
