Assam CM meets PM Modi to discuss flood recovery and state priorities

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has held a series of high-level meetings in New Delhi with central leadership to address the state’s flood recovery and development priorities. During a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sarma presented a roadmap for the next phase of the flood response, focusing on rebuilding infrastructure, restoring livelihoods, and ensuring comprehensive recovery. The Prime Minister reaffirmed the central government’s support for these efforts.

Sarma also briefed Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on damage assessments and reconstruction plans. The discussions emphasized the need for coordinated support to restore essential services and assist affected families. Additionally, the Chief Minister met with Union Minister Pralhad Joshi to discuss priorities in education, renewable energy, and food supplies, specifically focusing on streamlining financial support for teachers under the Samagra Shiksha scheme.

In contrast to the government's focus on recovery, Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi has called for a ₹10,000-crore special package from the Centre to compensate for economic losses and infrastructure damage. Gogoi criticized the utilization of the PM CARES Fund, alleging that a significant portion of its corpus remains in fixed deposits while the state requires urgent assistance.

Separately, the Chief Minister expressed concern to Meghalaya’s leadership regarding recent violence in Shillong involving Assam-registered vehicles, calling for restraint to maintain regional harmony. In a security-related development, Assam Police reported preventing 17 alleged illegal infiltrators from entering the state.
