Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reviews development projects and signals cabinet expansion

On 14 May, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state’s development and heritage initiatives were progressing well and pledged to accelerate work. He noted that last year’s peak electricity demand was 2,950 MW and that summer demand could rise to about 3,100 MW, and directed the three state power‑distribution companies to ensure uninterrupted supply while advancing thermal, solar and pumped‑storage projects.

Sarma also reviewed the Kamakhya Access Corridor project linking the Kamakhya temple, saying most legal clearances are completed and construction will speed up, aiming to improve facilities for pilgrims.

Under the "Advantage Assam 2.0" programme, investment proposals worth over ₹5 lakh crore have been received; more than 60 % of these promises are in advanced implementation stages, and the chief minister ordered faster execution and personal outreach to industry leaders.

The day before, Sarma indicated that a cabinet expansion is likely in the first week of June, after the assembly session scheduled for 21‑26 May. He will travel to Delhi to discuss the matter with party leadership and emphasized that no pressure is being applied on BJP legislators for ministerial posts. He also highlighted that the government has begun work on its election pledges, including creating two lakh government jobs and steps toward a Uniform Civil Code.
