Assam CM announces police reforms and new Anti-Narcotics Task Force

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently presided over a two-day senior police officers' conference in Dergaon to address law and order, police reforms, and security challenges. Key outcomes include the decision to establish an Anti-Narcotics Task Force to combat new trafficking routes from Myanmar through Arunachal Pradesh, and the creation of two new specialized battalions: one for the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and another to secure ONGC and OIL installations.

The Chief Minister emphasized improving conviction rates and ensuring criminal chargesheets are filed within 60 to 90 days under new criminal laws. To strengthen the force, the government plans to add two more battalions and is considering recruiting over 5,000 youths next year. Discussions also addressed the need to expand police housing to accommodate the state's 91,000 personnel.

Additionally, Sarma highlighted the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy's emergence as a national training hub, noting that personnel from states like Manipur and Goa are utilizing its facilities. On a separate note, the Chief Minister marked the fifth anniversary of the Karbi Anglong Peace Accord, crediting central leadership for restoring stability and enabling economic growth in the region.
