Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma launches large‑scale narcotics destruction drive

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated a narcotics destruction programme at the 14th Assam Police Battalion compound in Daulashal, Nalbari, on July 12. The operation destroyed narcotic substances worth ₹472.51 crore, including 58.88 kg of heroin, 37,796.34 kg of cannabis, 0.05 kg of cocaine, more than 1.8 million methamphetamine tablets and other drugs.

Sarma said the state seizes over ₹1,000 crore of narcotics annually and has registered nearly 3,300 drug‑related cases in the past five years, targeting a total of ₹3,227 crore in seized substances. A new drug‑incineration machine, supplied by the central government, will be used for the next ten days and for future district‑level destruction drives. The CM highlighted an inter‑state coordination mechanism under Union Home Minister Amit Shah and noted a decline in trafficking through Assam following the BJP’s win in West Bengal. The Assam BJP praised the initiative as a decisive step toward a drug‑free society.
