Assam CM Himanta Sarma leads large‑scale drug destruction and seizure

On July 12, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated a state‑level drug disposal programme in Nalbari district, overseeing the destruction of narcotics and psychotropic substances worth Rs 472.51 crore. The haul included morphine, heroin, ganja, cough syrup, tablets, Yaba tablets and opium, which were crushed with a road roller and a Union‑provided disposal machine. Sarma said the operation would continue for ten days to eliminate the seized drugs.

Two days earlier, police in Sribhumi district seized about 30,000 Yaba tablets valued at around Rs 3 crore and arrested three suspects. Sarma praised the raid on X, stating, "Every shipment has a destination, this one was the police station." The actions are part of Assam’s intensified campaign against drug trafficking, with the state serving as a transit route for narcotics from Myanmar through the Northeast.
