Assam CM Himanta Sarma urges stronger Northeast cooperation and investment

At a NITI Aayog interaction in New Delhi, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the next decade must place India's Northeast at the centre of the country's growth architecture. He emphasized balanced, inclusive development, geographic equity and the need for the eight northeastern states to work together to unlock the region’s potential.

Sarma pointed to recent achievements such as rapid economic progress, rising investor confidence, the Tata semiconductor plant in Assam, and a newly signed tripartite memorandum of understanding between the central government, Assam and Nagaland to facilitate mineral‑oil exploration in border areas. He called for greater infrastructure, skill development and improved logistics to overcome the region’s land‑locked challenges and to make the Northeast a growth hub and gateway to Asia.
