A 4.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Guwahati, Assam, on Tuesday morning at approximately 9:57 AM IST. The National Centre for Seismology reported the tremor originated at a depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicenter located in the Goalpara region, roughly 81 kilometers west-southwest of Guwahati.

Scientists attribute the seismic activity to the region's complex geological setting. The Indian Plate continues to move northward, interacting with the Eurasian Plate and the Burma Plate, which builds significant pressure beneath the Earth's surface. When this accumulated stress exceeds the strength of the rocks along faults, energy is released as seismic waves.

While the tremor caused brief shaking across several districts, experts note that a single moderate earthquake cannot be used to predict a larger event. However, the region remains at significant seismic risk.
