Assam expands PM POSHAN nutrition programme and social audits
The Assam government is expanding its PM POSHAN school nutrition programme for the 2026-27 period, aiming to cover approximately 28.97 lakh children. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated the initiative focuses on dietary diversity and child health through measures such as school-based Nutrition Gardens, ragi-based health drinks, and additional weekly egg provisions.
To ensure transparency and accountability, the state will conduct social audits of the scheme in 925 schools, as well as centralized kitchens in Kamrup and Jorhat. These audits will be carried out by Social Audit Facilitation Teams (SAFT) composed of parents, women's self-help group representatives, civil society members, and local authorities. The audit process is scheduled for completion by November 20, 2026.
