Assam expands welfare benefits for 7 lakh construction workers
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the expansion of welfare initiatives for more than seven lakh registered construction workers in the state. Under the Assam Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board, these workers and their families are eligible for 22 different types of benefits.
The state has disbursed Rs 773.21 crore toward these welfare schemes, which are being implemented through the ‘Nirman Sakhi’ programme. The initiative aims to provide social and economic support to those involved in building infrastructure and homes.
Educational support is also a key component of the plan. The government is constructing nine Model Degree Colleges across Assam, with 50 per cent of seats reserved for the children and family members of construction workers to improve access to higher education.
