Assam Flood Relief Reaches Over 40,000 Families as RSS Volunteers Mobilize

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) volunteers and Sangh‑inspired organisations have been active in rescue and relief operations across eastern Assam after the July floods. More than 1,900 volunteers have assisted 40,168 families in 378 villages of Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat districts, providing food, drinking water, medicines, clothing, bedding and rebuilding homes. Over 50 medical camps, organised with the National Medicos Organisation, have delivered health services, while volunteers have helped farmers with paddy transplantation and livestock care.

A letter to the editor highlights the environmental dimension of the disaster, pointing to extensive deforestation in neighbouring Nagaland—about 795 sq km of tree cover lost between 2013 and 2023—and unscientific coal and strip mining that have altered water flow and soil stability. The writer urges the Nagaland government to order an independent inquiry and for the Assam and central governments to investigate these factors as possible contributors to the severe flooding.
