Assam floods 2026 affect over 4.45 lakh people, 68 dead
Heavy monsoon rains caused unprecedented flooding across Assam's six worst‑hit districts – Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Kamrup (Metropolitan). The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reported that 4.45 lakh (445,385) people were affected and 631 villages remained submerged. The death toll rose to 68, with many still missing.
More than 2.56 lakh livestock were impacted, including over 26,000 domestic animals washed away. Relief efforts operate 184 camps and distribution centres sheltering roughly 28,700 displaced persons, among them 97 pregnant or lactating women and 42 persons with disabilities. The centre‑state response includes Prime Minister Narendra Modi meeting Assam MPs and pledging central assistance, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma overseeing a “war‑footing” relief operation, and the Indian Air Force evacuating 458 stranded citizens while air‑dropping more than nine tonnes of supplies.
