Assam government plans dedicated policy to promote agarwood sector
The Assam government has launched a multi-departmental initiative to promote the state’s agarwood sector through the creation of a dedicated Agarwood Policy. A newly formed Multi-Departmental Task Force held its first meeting to discuss streamlining the industry from cultivation and processing to marketing and exports.
Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika, alongside other cabinet ministers, engaged with farmers, traders, and industry representatives to address practical challenges in plantation and cultivation. The government aims to build a sustainable value chain that maximizes economic returns for farmers and entrepreneurs while ensuring the protection of natural forest resources.
Assam currently possesses an estimated two lakh hectares of agarwood plantations, providing a significant resource base for high-value products such as perfumes, incense, and fragrances.
