Assam human-wildlife conflict rises as 572 people killed in five years

Human-wildlife conflict in the Indian state of Assam is showing an increasing trend, with 572 people reported dead due to animal attacks between 2021 and 2025. During this five-year period, 374 people were also injured, while 135 animals were killed or injured. The most affected species include elephants, with 123 casualties, followed by seven rhinos and five tigers.

In a recent incident in the Goalpara district, police constable Amzad Ali of the 17th Assam Police Battalion was trampled to death by a wild elephant while on patrolling duty at the Dakurbhita camp.

Goalpara remains one of the most vulnerable districts, having recorded over 100 human deaths in recent years. The state Forest Department is responsible for the management of wildlife habitats and the mitigation of these conflicts.
