Assam implements new hydrocarbon policy to boost energy security
The Assam Hydrocarbon Exploration, Production and Upstream Ecosystem Development Policy, 2026 has officially come into force. The new framework is designed to unlock the state's untapped hydrocarbon potential and accelerate oil and natural gas exploration and production.
Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri described the policy as a significant step toward strengthening India’s energy security and supporting the national vision of energy self-reliance. The initiative aims to create an investor-friendly environment by facilitating clearances, reducing procedural hurdles, and encouraging the use of advanced exploration technologies.
In addition to boosting domestic energy production, the policy is expected to drive economic development in Northeast India and generate both direct and indirect employment opportunities for the local workforce.
