Assam launches bamboo bicycle initiative for green mobility
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced the launch of the ‘Assam Bamboo Cycle’, an initiative designed to promote sustainable mobility and green industries through bamboo-based innovation. The project aims to modernize the state’s traditional bamboo economy by transitioning from handicrafts to high-value, contemporary products like bicycles.
By integrating traditional skills with modern design, the initiative seeks to create new livelihood opportunities across the entire value chain, including cultivation, processing, fabrication, and marketing. This expansion is intended to benefit artisans, farmers, and young entrepreneurs. The Chief Minister noted that previous policy reforms reclassifying bamboo as grass have already opened doors for green industry and entrepreneurship in the region.
The bamboo-crafted bicycles are scheduled to be showcased at the Brahmaputra Riverfront in Guwahati starting October 2, inviting cycling enthusiasts to experience the material’s potential for sustainable manufacturing.
