Assam-Meghalaya border tension follows alleged intrusion at Maikhuli

Tension flared along the Assam-Meghalaya border at Maikhuli village on Saturday morning following an alleged intrusion by a group of over 100 people from Assam. The group reportedly dismantled a boundary wall and a school wall, erected bamboo barricades, and locked an entrance gate, preventing local villagers from accessing the Maikhuli field.

The incident led to a physical confrontation between the group and local residents, including women who confronted the men on-site. Villagers eventually broke the locks and dismantled the barricades to regain access to the area.

Police and district officials from both states intervened to restore order. Security forces, including the CRPF and personnel from the Pillangkata and Basistha Mandir outposts, were deployed to the area as a precautionary measure. While the situation is currently reported as under control, local organizations, such as the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People, have urged the state government to strengthen security and address recurring land boundary disputes in the region.
