Assam Minister Ranoj Pegu Confirms Lower Subansiri Dam Safety
Assam Education and IT Minister Ranoj Pegu inspected the NHPC‑operated Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project at Gerukamukh. He reviewed the dam’s 116‑metre structure, the control room, reservoir and Early Warning System, and met with engineers to assess flood‑management procedures. The reservoir is currently filled to 92 metres, maintaining a 15‑metre flood cushion, while about 3,800 cumecs of water are being released downstream in a regulated manner. During a recent heavy‑rain spell the dam recorded a peak inflow of roughly 13,800 cumecs on 13 July, of which 12,500 cumecs were discharged under controlled conditions. Pegu affirmed that operations follow the guidelines of the National Dam Safety Authority and that the dam can temporarily store excess monsoon inflows to mitigate downstream flooding. He reassured residents of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Majuli that there is no cause for panic and that safety remains the top priority.
