Assam MLA Dr Habbey Teron appointed Deputy Speaker

BJP legislator Dr Habbey Teron, a medical doctor elected from the newly created Amri (ST) constituency in West Karbi Anglong, has been named Deputy Speaker of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly. The appointment was announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and will be formalised during the budget session beginning on 6 July 2026. Teron is the first MLA from Amri and his elevation is presented as a move to strengthen tribal representation from the hill districts of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao. With the ruling National Democratic Alliance holding a comfortable majority, his election to the constitutional post is expected to be a procedural formality.
