Assam-Nagaland border dispute escalates in Negheribil

Tensions have escalated in the disputed Negheribil area along the Assam-Nagaland border following violent confrontations. The Lotha Lower Range Public Organisation (LLRPO) reported that representatives and village council chairmen were assaulted by a mob from Assam during recent incidents on August 25 and 26.

The conflict reportedly began when Assam forest department officials erected a barricade in the disputed belt, restricting the movement of Longayim village council members. Subsequent attempts by local authorities and village leaders to assess the situation led to further agitation from crowds numbering between 200 and 300 people. Police and civil administration officials from both Assam and Nagaland intervened to restore order.

These clashes highlight broader, long-standing territorial disputes within Northeast India. While the region is often treated as a single administrative unit, states such as Assam, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur face persistent ethnic and boundary conflicts that challenge the notion of a unified political community.
