Assam Police arrest individuals following attack on Bihu performers

Assam Police have arrested 13 individuals in connection with an alleged assault on a Bihu cultural troupe in the Sribhumi district. The incident occurred during an idol immersion procession following a Durga Puja event.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned the attack, describing Bihu as “the soul of Assam” and stating that the state will not tolerate insults to Assamese culture and heritage. Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh confirmed that a case has been registered at the Sribhumi police station and that investigations are ongoing to identify further suspects.

Student and youth organizations, including the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), have demanded strict punishment for the perpetrators. AASU leaders criticized the government's response and the perceived lack of safety for Assamese people, while AJYCP officials called for immediate arrests to prevent further incidents in the Barak Valley.
