Assam police arrest over 300 in statewide fraud crackdown
Assam police have arrested approximately 330 individuals during a coordinated statewide crackdown targeting fraudsters, touts, and impersonators. The operation, conducted across 29 districts, was initiated following directives from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to address rising complaints regarding financial scams and fraudulent communications.
Director General of Police Harmeet Singh stated that the suspects were involved in various schemes, including luring victims with promises to settle police cases, impersonating police officials or advocates, and using threatening phone calls to extract money. Some suspects were also reportedly involved in the trade of stolen goods. Many of the accused allegedly targeted individuals near police stations by promising to fast-track official processes.
While arrests were made in most districts, including significant numbers in Cachar and Lakhimpur, investigators have also traced 8 to 10 suspects to cities outside the state, such as Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Police are continuing technical analysis and ground verification to identify further links to organized fraud networks.
