Assam police suspend four officers after ambulance stopped for CM convoy

Four police personnel in Assam have been suspended following an incident in Silchar where an ambulance was stopped to allow Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s convoy to pass on September 30.

Cachar Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das issued the suspension orders for SI Bijoy Goswami, SI Sibsankar Das, LNK Jahurul Islam, and LNK Kawsar Ahmed Barbhuiya. The suspensions are pending a departmental inquiry into alleged negligence during route-lining duties. While initial reports suggested the ambulance was empty and the driver had given permission to proceed, a subsequent review by the SSP indicated that the stoppage caused public inconvenience and obstructed services, noting the ambulance was using its siren and emergency lights.

Chief Minister Sarma issued a public apology to the patient and their family, stating that a convoy should never take precedence over urgent medical care. He emphasized that VIP movements must not disrupt ordinary citizens and has ordered an investigation to determine why his standing instructions were not followed.
