Assam Police to challenge bail orders in Zubeen Garg death case

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of Assam’s cultural icon Zubeen Garg has announced plans to challenge the Gauhati High Court’s decision to grant bail to two accused individuals. The SIT will move the Supreme Court to appeal the bail orders granted to Amritprabha Mahanta, a co-singer of the late artist, and Sandipan Garg, a suspended Assam Police Deputy Superintendent of Police.

SIT Chief Munna Prasad Gupta stated that the appeals will be filed as soon as the courts reopen following the current holiday period. The Gauhati High Court granted bail to Sandipan Garg on October 16, noting limited scope for evidence tampering, and had previously granted bail to Amritprabha Mahanta on October 9.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death involves charges of murder, criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and negligence. The trial is currently proceeding on a day-to-day basis in a fast-track court, with over 125 witnesses having been examined so far.
