Assam police encounter kills two suspected vehicle thieves
Two suspected vehicle thieves were killed in a police encounter in the Sonapur area of Assam’s Kamrup district in the early hours of Thursday. The incident followed the theft of a commercial vehicle from the Fancy Bazar area of Guwahati.
According to police, the suspects attempted to evade a checkpoint at Marakdola by ramming a vehicle into a concrete pillar and opening fire on officers. In the ensuing exchange of fire, two suspects, identified as Babu Singh of Manipur and Saidul Alom Laskar of Assam, were killed. A third suspect managed to escape into a nearby forested area. Authorities recovered two pistols and ammunition at the scene.
In a separate incident in the same district, two Assam Police personnel were killed and two others injured after a colleague allegedly opened fire with an AK-47 at the Gamerimura Police Outpost. The deceased have been identified as Fazrul Ali and Indrajit Bora, the officer-in-charge of the outpost. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and an investigation is underway.
