Assam rhino population reaches 3,260 with zero poaching in 2025

Assam has recorded zero known poaching incidents of the one-horned rhinoceros in 2025, marking only the second time the state has achieved this milestone since the 1970s. According to the International Rhino Foundation’s 2026 State of the Rhino report and statements from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the state is now home to approximately 3,260 rhinoceroses. This figure represents roughly 80 per cent of the global population, which is estimated at 4,075 individuals.

Kaziranga National Park remains the primary stronghold for the species, hosting more than 2,600 rhinos, while Manas National Park contains an estimated 40 to 50. The reversal from the mid-2010s, when poaching rates were significantly higher, is attributed to enhanced intelligence gathering, improved surveillance, and increased cooperation between forest personnel and local communities.

While Assam and Nepal both reported zero known poaching incidents in 2025, the species remains classified as vulnerable due to ongoing threats such as habitat degradation and invasive vegetation. Conservation officials noted that the focus must now shift toward ensuring sufficient and healthy habitats to support the growing population.
