Assam schools face disruptions due to Census 2027 teacher deployment

Government schools in Assam are facing significant academic disruptions as teachers are being deployed for Census 2027 duties. The shortage of staff has left many institutions struggling to complete syllabi ahead of half-yearly examinations, with the impact being most severe in primary schools.

In several districts, including Chirang, Baksa, Nalbari, and Sonitpur, the lack of available educators has forced schools to adopt unusual management strategies, such as relying on senior students or school cooks to supervise classes. The Assam State Primary Teachers’ Association noted that in many primary schools, where the average number of teachers is only two, teaching has nearly ceased in some areas since early August.
