Assam seeks West Bengal land to develop Madhupur Satra

The Assam government is seeking additional land and cooperation from West Bengal to expand and develop the historic Madhupur Satra in Cooch Behar. The site is significant for its association with the polymath Srimanta Sankardev.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the goal is to transform the area into a culturally and spiritually significant tourist destination. While the government has requested land from West Bengal, Sarma noted that if additional land is not granted, development will proceed within the existing boundaries. The Assam government is also considering purchasing nearby land to facilitate a larger-scale project.

West Bengal North Bengal Development Minister Nisith Pramanik indicated the state's support for the initiative, with the West Bengal government reportedly providing Rs 30 crore for the project. Sarma has invited a West Bengal delegation to visit Batadrava Than in Assam to observe development work at Sankardev’s birthplace.
