Assam students' union seeks protections for school classes during census

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has called on the Assam government and census authorities to implement a special mechanism to prevent the disruption of regular classes in government schools. The union expressed concern that the deployment of teachers for the ongoing two-month census exercise could negatively impact students, particularly as half-yearly examinations are scheduled for September.

AASU leaders Utpal Sarma and Samiran Phukan noted that while the census is vital for the future of Assam’s indigenous people, the current arrangement may create an educational divide. They pointed out that private institutions will continue regular classes during the census period, whereas government institutions may suffer due to teacher involvement in census duties. The union warned that such disruptions could undermine parental confidence in the public education system.
