Assam Teen Murder Sparks Highway Protest in Hailakandi

A 15‑year‑old girl was found dead after an alleged rape in Hailakandi district, Assam, on the night of August 1. Police say the crime occurred near National Highway 6 under the Katlicherra police outpost and have detained five suspects while a forensic team investigates.

Local residents responded by blocking the Assam‑Mizoram connecting highway, halting hundreds of vehicles for several hours and demanding swift, severe punishment. Hailakandi MLA Dr Milon Das visited the protest site, urging authorities to follow due process and confirming that the detained individuals will undergo tests before any verdict. Protesters called for a fast‑track court, compensation for the victim’s family, and, in some cases, an encounter‑type response.
