Assam to study Himachal Pradesh monkey control measures

The Assam government is dispatching a delegation of six to seven MLAs and forest department officials to Himachal Pradesh to study effective methods for controlling the growing monkey menace in the state.

Increasing monkey populations, particularly Rhesus macaques and cap monkeys, are causing significant damage to agricultural and horticultural crops. In regions such as the Nagaon district, some farmers have reportedly ceased vegetable cultivation due to the threat. Beyond agricultural impact, monkeys are entering homes and causing disruption in urban areas.

Assam officials aim to replicate successful strategies used in Himachal Pradesh, which previously implemented large-scale sterilization programs to manage its own monkey population. The visiting team will prepare a report and submit recommendations to the state cabinet to seek a permanent solution to the crisis.
