Assassination of King Wenceslaus III Ends Přemyslid Dynasty

On 7 August 1306, the 17‑year‑old King Wenceslaus III was murdered in the Moravian city of Olomouc. His death extinguished the male line of the Přemyslid dynasty, the first royal house of Bohemia, which had ruled for more than five centuries and laid the foundations of the Czech state and Central European institutions.

The Přemyslids traced their origins to the legendary farmer Přemysl and reached their zenith under Wenceslaus II, who united Bohemia and Poland. Wenceslaus III, who succeeded his father at age 15, inherited a large realm, debts, political tensions and numerous enemies. He had married Viola Elisabeth of Cieszyn to strengthen the dynasty’s influence in Silesia. His assassination marked the end of the dynasty’s male succession and a turning point in the region’s medieval history.
