Assemblea Nacional Catalana raises press freedom concerns at OSCE conference
The Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC) has raised concerns regarding press freedom and the criminalization of political dissent at the 2026 Warsaw Human Dimension Conference, organized by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
Representing the ANC, Teresa Calveras addressed plenary sessions, specifically highlighting the pressures facing independent journalism in Spain. She cited the case of the independent Catalan media outlet Directa, which reported on the infiltration of Spanish police agents into social movements. Calveras noted that the Spanish Data Protection Agency has initiated proceedings against Directa and other Catalan media outlets following these reports.
The ANC emphasized that the Council of Europe’s Platform for the Protection of Journalists classified the situation involving Directa as a level 2 alert, signifying a serious threat to press freedom. The organization argued that journalists must be able to investigate matters of public interest and hold authorities accountable without facing administrative or legal reprisals.
