Assisted living facilities face scrutiny over redevelopment and staffing models

Debates regarding the management and structure of assisted living facilities are emerging in Denmark and Norway.

In Hirtshals, Denmark, Anders Münster, Chairman of Havglimt Friplejeboliger, addressed concerns regarding planned renovations and expansions at the Havglimt facility. He clarified that the project involves beautifying the area, replacing two older buildings, and establishing eight new homes, a community house, and expanded administrative facilities. Münster emphasized that the facility remains a quiet, well-functioning residence with 24-hour staffing to ensure resident safety and community integration.

In Norway, concerns have been raised regarding proposed changes to the Skatval residential center. Critics argue that transitioning parts of the facility to a model reliant on home nursing services rather than constant on-site staffing may compromise the security of elderly residents. The debate centers on whether scheduled home care visits can provide the same level of immediate assistance and perceived safety as the current 24-hour staffed model for residents with complex health needs.
