Italy launches new organic brand and enotourism initiatives
Italy is implementing several strategic initiatives to bolster its agroalimentary sector. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry has launched the “Marchio Biologico Italiano,” a voluntary logo designed to certify products made with 100% Italian organic raw materials. This move aims to combat “Italian Sounding” and enhance traceability. While organic consumption in Italy has grown by 9.2% to reach 4.4 billion euros, the sector faces challenges, including a 5.4% decrease in organic agricultural surface area due to rising production costs and climate instability.
In the wine sector, a new decree has been signed to promote enotourism, aiming to strengthen the reputation of Italian wines and support local territories through increased visibility of vineyards and traditions. Additionally, the biotech industry is gaining momentum, with Assobiotec announcing the XIV edition of European Biotech Week to showcase applications in health and agriculture. The Italian biotech sector reported nearly 6,000 companies and a turnover of 53.4 billion euros in 2024.
Regional economic data shows continued growth in Emilia-Romagna, which remains Italy’s leading region for agroalimentary exports, reaching 11.5 billion euros in 2025. However, climate change continues to impact supply chains, causing shortages and increased costs for fresh produce like salads and tomatoes following extreme summer weather.
