Associated British Foods pivots Primark toward e-commerce
Associated British Foods (ABF) is undergoing a significant organizational shift, moving toward a separation of its Primark retail division from its food business. This strategic change comes as the group navigates a challenging consumer environment.
Primark is pivoting its long-standing brick-and-mortar model to embrace digital growth. The retailer plans to launch home delivery services in the United Kingdom and is investing in e-commerce infrastructure, including the £90 million purchase of an automated fulfillment center in Sheffield. The company is also expanding its Click & Collect services.
Despite these strategic moves, ABF faces financial headwinds. The company's stock experienced a sharp decline of approximately 10-11 percent following a trading update that revealed weaker-than-expected summer sales for Primark. Additionally, ABF expects its sugar segment to report an adjusted operating loss in the range of £25 million to £60 million for the 2026 fiscal year. While Primark's total sales are projected to grow by roughly 2 percent, like-for-like sales are expected to see a decline of approximately 2.6 percent.
