Association of Ghana Industries seeks tariff relief for leather sector

The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) is advocating for structural reforms to bolster Ghana’s garment, textile, and leather sectors. A primary proposal involves implementing zero-rated import tariffs on essential raw materials to reduce manufacturing costs and enhance the competitiveness of locally produced goods.

Industry leaders identified several critical constraints to growth, including high input costs, limited market access, and significant skills shortages. To address technical gaps, the AGI is seeking partnerships with technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions to provide practical training for artisans.

In light of government initiatives to engage local manufacturers for security service uniforms, industry players emphasize that capacity building must precede import restrictions. Discussions are also underway regarding access to finance, with the AGI engaging EXIM Bank and the Development Bank to explore potential credit facilities, specifically targeting women in business.
