Association of Social Workers in Greece calls for equal school staffing

The Association of Social Workers of Greece (SKLE) has issued a letter to the Minister of Education, Sofia Zacharaki, highlighting a significant disproportion in the allocation of school staffing positions.

According to SKLE, for the 2025-2026 school year, only 216 out of 700 planned positions—approximately 31%—were allocated to social workers, while the remainder were designated for psychologists. The association argues that these two professions serve complementary rather than alternative roles in supporting students, families, and educators.

SKLE is requesting the creation of permanent multidisciplinary psychosocial support teams in every school unit. They emphasize that the current distribution does not reflect the professional scope of social workers, whose duties include family mediation, community networking, and supporting students through critical situations.
