Assogomma reports mixed outlook for Italian rubber industry

The Italian rubber industry is facing a period of economic divergence, according to Giovanni Panico, director of Assogomma. The association, which represents 200 companies and 30,000 employees, reports that one-third of its members are seeing turnover growth, one-third remain stable, and one-third are experiencing a decline.

While recent production data for tires and technical rubber goods shows positive trends compared to late 2025, overall production levels remain 20% to 25% below pre-pandemic figures. The sector has been impacted by energy costs and supply chain disruptions caused by tensions in the Gulf, which hindered the availability of both synthetic and natural rubber.

Assogomma has expressed concerns regarding the European Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Under new regulations, steel reinforcement wire used in tires will be included in the scheme. A study by Tyres Europe estimates this will cost European producers approximately 70 million euros in 2028, potentially rising to 140 million euros annually by 2034.
