World Heart Day: Global health experts urge prevention of cardiovascular diseases
Global health organizations and medical professionals are emphasizing the critical importance of cardiovascular disease prevention in observance of World Heart Day. Cardiovascular diseases remain a leading cause of mortality worldwide, accounting for approximately 20.5 million deaths annually. In the Americas, these diseases cause over 2.2 million deaths each year.
Specific regional data highlights the severity of the issue: in Costa Rica, cardiovascular diseases are the primary cause of death, with ischemic heart disease alone causing 3,262 deaths in 2024. In Ecuador, ischemic heart diseases resulted in 14,471 deaths in 2024, representing 16.2% of total mortality. In Serbia, cardiovascular diseases account for nearly 50% of all deaths.
Medical experts, including specialists from the Cleveland Clinic, warn that many cardiovascular conditions develop silently without symptoms until they reach advanced stages. Prevention strategies focus on managing risk factors such as hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, smoking, and physical inactivity. The 2026 World Heart Day campaign, titled ‘Don’t Miss a Beat’, encourages individuals to monitor key health indicators like blood pressure and glucose levels to ensure early detection and intervention.
