ASST Sette Laghi warns of melanoma risks from sunburns

Medical experts at ASST Sette Laghi are warning against the dangers of sun exposure and sunburns, which are primary risk factors for developing melanoma, the most aggressive form of skin cancer. Dr. Maurizio Lombardo, head of the Melanoma Skin Centre, emphasized that every sunburn causes skin damage, particularly when occurring during childhood or adolescence.

To reduce risk, health officials recommend using appropriate sunscreens, avoiding peak sunlight hours, and protecting children. The warning comes amid concerns regarding 'infodemia' and misinformation on social media, such as the 'tanorexia' trend and viral videos containing scientifically inaccurate advice regarding sun exposure and sunscreen use.

In the province of Varese, the incidence of melanoma is reported at approximately 66 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which is significantly higher than the national average of 22 cases per 100,000.
