Assurance maladie launches new fraud detection initiative in France
France’s Assurance maladie has launched a new initiative to combat healthcare fraud by increasing transparency for insured individuals. The agency will now send an email every ten days to each insured person, itemizing recent medical payments made on their behalf.
This measure aims to address vulnerabilities created by third-party payment systems, where patients often remain unaware of financial transactions between medical providers and public funds. Marc Scholler, director of audit and fraud prevention for Assurance maladie, noted that fraudulent billing, such as fictitious or inflated medical acts, often goes unnoticed because individuals rarely cross-reference their online statements.
In 2024, the agency intercepted 628 million euros in fraudulent claims, with audits revealing that 70 percent of these infractions were committed by healthcare professionals rather than patients. To assist in monitoring, insured individuals can use their Ameli user portals to review histories and report suspicious activity via an integrated chatbot and dedicated digital forms.
