The French National Health Insurance (Assurance Maladie) has officially recognized chronic fatigue syndrome, also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis. This institutional shift, effective as of August 6, 2026, aims to change how the condition is diagnosed and managed by distinguishing it from psychological or psychiatric disorders.

Key clinical features identified include intense, lasting exhaustion that is not relieved by sleep, and post-exertional malaise. This malaise can be triggered by physical, cognitive, or sensory activities, as well as emotional stress or temperature changes. The recognition emphasizes the importance of ‘pacing’—the management of energy levels—and highlights the potential risks associated with graduated exercise programs.
