AST and ALT enzyme levels linked to colorectal cancer risk
A study conducted by Epic Research using medical data from the United States has identified a potential link between common blood test results and colorectal cancer in adults aged 18 to 44. The research found that lower levels of two enzymes, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), were associated with a higher probability of being diagnosed with colorectal cancer compared to those with intermediate values.
While these findings are notable because doctors typically monitor for increases in these enzymes, researchers emphasize that low levels are not a direct cause of the disease. They also cautioned that low AST or ALT levels are not currently a sufficient reason to trigger an automatic colonoscopy, noting that symptoms and family history remain more critical diagnostic factors.
